At Big Sunday, we connect people through helping. We believe that we’re all in this together and that absolutely everybody has some way that they can help someone else. Interested in getting involved? Here’s an overview of our volunteer opportunities to get you started. You can also check out our calendar of upcoming events here, and don’t forget to sign up for our email list for updates and reminders!
All of our events are open to everyone – no orientation or regular commitment is needed! We just ask folks to fill out the sign-up forms for each event so we can get an idea of how many people to expect.
WEEKLY!
Every Tuesday at 10am (Art Tuesdays) and every Thursday at 10am (TM@10), we host a special hands-on service project at our offices on Melrose. These projects benefit a different non-profit each week, and range from making soup-in-a-jar for low-income families to assembling blankets for animal shelters to putting together hygiene kits for folks experiencing homelessness, and beyond! These weekly events are a great opportunity to get to know others in the community while helping someone else (and enjoying the tasty food we provide for volunteers!) We also have a similar event every Wednesday at 10am (AW@10), where we host a group of volunteers who have various developmental challenges. All are welcome to attend any Art Tuesday, TM@10, and AW@10 event – we just ask that you sign up on each event’s page so we can get an idea of how many people to expect.
MONTHLY!
In addition to our weekly and bi-weekly events, we also host a big monthly event as part of our Monthly on Melrose series. Most of these events are held at our offices and include our MLK Day Clothing Drive & Community Breakfast, Valentine-Making, Bingo-Playing Community Dinner, Vet’s Night & Dinner, Books n’ Brunch, Back to School Drive, Spooky Sunday, Thanksgiving Stuffing event, and of course, our Annual Holiday Party & Singalong. Each event features the opportunity to work on a variety of hands-on service projects while also meeting new people, enjoying a meal together, and having fun! All ages are always welcome, and these events are always free.
YEARLY!
A Month of Big Sunday (MOBS) is our biggest annual event held throughout the month of May (formerly known as Big Sunday Weekend), drawing thousands of people from all over Southern California, of all ages and backgrounds, to work together at hundreds of nonprofits, schools and other agencies. The schedule of events as well as volunteer sign-ups are posted on April 1st every year. Interested in hosting a MOBS event with your non-profit, school, business, or faith organization? Visit the MOBS page for more info!
ONGOING!
♦ At Big Sunday, we like to say that we’re all in the same boat, which is why it’s so important to build community and help each other. But we also mean it literally! 6-8 times per year, we host a special project called We’re All in the Same Boat – We host a big group of under-served and deserving folks on special cruises through San Pedro Harbor. Many of these nice people have never been on a boat before! We need volunteers to host, be friendly, hand out donuts (of course!), enjoy one another and enjoy the ride. Everyone has exactly one job: To meet one new person. For information about upcoming cruises, visit the We’re All in the Same Boat Project page.
♦ More of the DIY, entrepreneurial type? The Lemonade Brigade may be the perfect fit! We can provide materials and information for you to host a Big Sunday Lemonade Stand any time of the year and anywhere in the world, all to benefit the Big Sunday Emergency Fund!
♦ It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and the perfect time to volunteer! That’s why we started our annual Holiday Volunteering & Giving Opportunities List – between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, we post and publicize more than 400 holiday projects for our nonprofit partners. Every year on November 1st, check out this great list to see how your office, scout troop, class, sewing circle or family can give back during the holidays.
♦ Looking to give back over the summer? Lots of folks have a little extra time during the summer that they’d like to use to give back. So, on June 1st we post the annual Big Sunday Summer List, which includes over 200 giving and helping opportunities for people of all ages, all over town.
No time to volunteer, but still want to contribute? Check out these other ways to give!
[Thanksgiving Stuffing Event] “Our Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without you guys. It warms my heart and replenishes my faith to witness such kindness in action.”
