Month of Big Sundays Kicks Off: The volunteer-nice event is filling up every single day in May

By Alysia Gray Painter

Big Sunday has been a big-of-heart Los Angeles event since 1999, when the very first volunteers set out around the city to pitch in, help out, and give back.

Soon thousands were joining the single day to-do, which soon became a full weekend. This made sense, as the number of volunteer projects pushed up into the low thousands.

What makes more sense, however? The fact that Big Sunday is now Month of Big Sundays. That means that each and any day in May you can find a school that needs some help with garden building, or participate in food collection, or sort recyclables, or help out with organizing gently used books for kids.

You can find something to do each day of May, for sure, but note that a sizable bulk of events is happening on Sunday, May 1 and there’s a volunteer-oriented Mother’s Day party on Sunday, May 8.

The Big Sunday Collection Drop-off & Schmooze events dot the calendar, if you’d like to show with some clothing or foodstuffs or other items and then stay to help sort. (That’s where the schmoozing comes in.)

It’s free to join, and there’s probably a place near you, since the events fan out over the region.

What volunteers will commit to doing a little something every day? Or perhaps every weekend day, right through the end of May? A whole month of Big Sundays, a happening that used to fill a weekend, is a mondo idea, and mondo ideas should always be met with a mondo, benevolent, community-nice response.

It’s just awesome, is all.
