The Big Squeeze: Kids to Help Kids with 75 Lemonade Stands

This year, Big Sunday’s “When Life Gives You Lemons Make Lemonade” Stand Project, is bigger than ever.

Some 75 lemonade stands — run by kids to benefit kids — will be set up all across the city on May 3 and 4. That’s up from 45 stands last year.

Each stand will charge a suggested 50-cent donation for a cup of cold lemonade. All the money raised will be split among five nonprofits that assist young people: Shane’s Inspiration, which builds playgrounds for disabled children; Create Now!, which provides creative arts programs for at-risk youth; Para Los Niños, which offers educational/family programs for low-income children; Special Needs Network Inc., which supports low-income families of autistic children; and Students Run LA, which trains and mentors at-risk students to run the L.A. Marathon.

“This is a great way for kids to learn that, even though they’re young, they can make a positive difference in the lives of others,” said Melissa Toy Ozeas, who has parlayed her experience of running a single lemonade stand for her daughter into overseeing this citywide effort for Big Sunday.

The Big Sunday lemonade stands can be found at the end of home driveways, at farmer’s markets, at several Caruso Affiliated malls, at schools and at other locations far and wide.
